Version v0.8
Workshop: Workshop: Praat
Kostenlose Software für phonetische Analysen
Research on the sound form of language requires more and more technical skills, especially in the processing and analysis of speech data. This workshop proposes an initiation to the methods of annotation, processing, and analysis of speech via the Praat software. Praat is a free software that allows annotating as well as analyzing or synthesizing speech. Its interface makes it easy to access for neophites (compared to emuR, for example, which requires the use of the R programming language) and allows non-specialized linguists to access a large number of tools for speech processing. For almost 20 years this software has been the most used in phonetics and corpus phonology, a community of users has been created and allows, in addition to keeping the software and its algorithms up to date, to see the release of new toolboxes and scripts regularly according to the advances and needs of the research field and the linguists. Here we will learn how to load, open, and annotate sound files in order to proceed with an acoustic analysis. The main focus will be on vowel processing in three different languages: French, English, German. We will start by creating annotation layers, then we will perform an aligned segmentation based on spectrograms, after which we will extract F1 and F2 values to compare the quality of vowels in the three languages. At first the process will be done by hand, then we will see how to use open source scripts to perform this task automatically on large amounts of data.
No technical prerequisites are required, but it is recommended to be familiar with the Windows10 environment. Though the workshop will start by a 20min recap of the articulatory/acoustic correlate, we expect participants to have some basic knowledge of phonetics and phonology (phone/phoneme concepts, articulation of speech sounds).
