DESCRIPTION:My talk will explore how "internet memes"\, as a dominant for
m of online communication\, are shaping the evolution of sociolinguistic
 s. Memes\, which combine visual elements with textual content\, function
as a distinct form of communication in the digital age\, often operatin
g as a hybrid visual language. By analyzing memes through the lens of so
ciolinguistics\, pragmatics\, and discourse analysis\, also it will high
light their role in influencing informal language use and cultural expre
ssion. Memes frequently utilize intertextuality\, referencing other cult
ural works\, events\, or previous memes\, to create layered meanings tha
t require shared knowledge within online communities. This intertextuali
ty contributes to the formation of new slang\, expressions\, and even gr
ammar patterns that spread rapidly through digital platforms\, influenci
ng offline language.\n\nAdditionally\, memes act as sociolinguistic mark
ers\, reflecting group identity and in-group language norms within diffe
rent subcultures and internet communities. They also serve as barometers
of societal trends and cultural shifts\, encapsulating and transmitting
complex social commentary through simple\, often humorous\, formats. My
talk will argue that memes are a powerful yet under-researched driver o
f language evolution\, providing insight into how informal\, digital com
munication practices are reshaping contemporary language. By examining m
emes’ role in language innovation and cultural discourse\, this talk wil
l contribute to our understanding of language in the context of internet
  culture.\n

DESCRIPTION:<html>\n<body>\n\n<p>The German prospective <i>stehen vor</i>
‘stand in front of’ NP construction is used to express that a subject r
eferent will participate in a future eventuality\, if nothing intervenes
. In this light verb construction\, the NP complement of the preposition
vor denotes the prospective eventuality. While Fleischhauer & Gamerschl
ag (2019) and Fleischhauer et al. (2019) restrict the position of the no
un within this NP complement to the semantic type of Change of State (Co
 S) nouns\, a further synchronous corpus study by Fleischhauer (2023) rej
ects this hypothesis. Concluding from the respective study\, Fleischhaue

DESCRIPTION:With Bell's Audience Design theory at its outset\, this study
seeks to explore the variation in Taylor Swift's accent depending on wh
ether she is addressing a national American audience or an audience of C
ountry music listeners. For this purpose\, Swift’s accent is analysed re
garding three phonetic features associated with Southern accents: the mo
nophthongisation of /aɪ/\, apical (ing)\, and the PIN/PEN merger. For ea
ch variable\, an auditory analysis and an acoustic analysis in Praat are
conducted. The analyses reveal an effect of variation in audience on Ta

n discussed how this difference in effects may be attributed to differen

DESCRIPTION:Auxiliary verbs are argued to be repair items\, that host the
features that the main verb cannot obtain (cf. Chomsky 1957\, Bjorkman
 2011). Cross-linguistically\, Fenger (2020) attested a tendency for the
tense feature to be expressed on an auxiliary if it co-occurs with aspec
t\, which is marked on the main verb. Slavic languages and their complex
tense/aspect marking system therefore provide interesting data to furth
er investigate this pattern. In this presentation\, I examine the featur
e distribution in Czech verb periphrasis. First I analyse the features i
n the Czech verbal paradigm through minimal pairs. Modeling the features
syntactically reveals morphological redundancies\, that also pose probl
ems for economy- and repair-based approaches to auxiliaries in syntax. T
 o derive auxiliary insertion in Czech\, I propose a re-analysis of the p
ast tense as aspectual and synthetic instead of periphrastic (Todorovic
2016). Connecting the issue of auxiliary insertion to the question of Sl
avic tense and aspect marking thus yields insight into both topics.

DESCRIPTION:Nominalisation describes the process as well as the result of
elements derived to be nouns. Comrie and Thompson (2007) distinguish be
tween seven types of nominalisations: action/state nouns\, agentive noun
 s\, instrumental nouns\, manner nouns\, locative nouns\, objective nouns
\, reason nouns. \nThis is a morphological study of deverbal nouns in th
e Wagi dialect of Beria (Zaghawa)\, an East-Saharan language of the Nilo
-Saharan phylum\, spoken in Chad and Sudan. The analysed data consist of
a word list of ca. 200 Wagi deverbal nouns\, elicited by linguist Rolan
d C. Stevenson in the 1980s\, and recent recordings of native speaker an
d linguist Elsadig Omda Ibrahim Elnur. \nWagi exhibits four different af
fixes used to form deverbal nouns. Their distribution is governed by the
verb class of the derived verbal root\, but there are also other factor
s such as derivational patterns. The suffix -la is used with class I ver
bs\, the prefix V(C)- with class I and II\, prefix Vkk(V)- with class II
\, and suffix -di with classes III and IV. Following Comrie and Thompson
’s (2007) classification\, most of them are inflectional action/state ty
pe nominalisations. However\, the suffix -la can also be used to form de
rivational action nominals. Wagi also exhibits nominalisations where one
argument of the verb is nominalised: the locative and the objective typ
 e. \nThough limited in time and scope\, the present study is able to exp
ose some differences of the present analysis of the nominalising affixes
compared to previous studies conducted on Beria deverbal nouns\, thereb
y hopefully advancing the study of the underdescribed language.

DESCRIPTION:This talk will focus on the characteristics of first-year stu
dents' argumentative writing in French as L2\, examining the challenges
students face when writing in a foreign language\, such as struggling wi
th text organization and structure and with insufficient lexical and gra
mmatical knowledge of L2. The analysis reveals that students’ texts don’
t follow the expected argumentative essay structure\, with key component
s such as the introduction and conclusion often omitted or inadequate. I
n addition\, the use of connectors in students’ writing is either absent
or severely limited\, which impedes the logical flow of their arguments
. While there is evidence of language transfer from their first language
(Serbian) and other languages they know (mainly English)\, no transfer
of essential composing skills\, believed to be already acquired in their
L1\, appears to occur. The vocabulary used in the essays is restricted\
, with a high amount of repetition and overuse of high-frequency lexical
items. These findings suggest that first-year students struggle not onl
y to express their arguments in a coherent and organized manner but also
to use grammatically accurate language and varied and sophisticated voc
abulary when constructing argumentative texts in L2 contexts. Understand
ing these challenges is necessary to improve academic writing instructio
n and help students develop their L2 writing skills.

ting takes place. Witnesses report a fight between different groups of r
estaurant customers sitting on a terrace. One person is shot. Two months
later we receive video recordings from the security camera of the resta
urant and from a mobile phone of a neighbour. Request: a detailed transc

ed from particular utterances? \n	Accident scene: Columbia. A Boeing 757
from American-Airlines crashes against a mountain on its route from Mia
mi to Cali 50km from the place of destination. Only 4 of the 155 passeng
ers\, and a dog\, survive the crash. The black box (which is actually br
ight orange) is found and sent to linguists for analysis.\n	Linguistic e
xpertise is being increasingly sought in criminal investigations or in t
he case of a serious accident. This talk offers an introduction to foren
sic phonetics\, a field that is fairly young\; it was only in the late 1
970s in large cases like the Yorkshire Ripper case in England or the RAF
-cases in Germany where linguists\, phoneticians in particular\, could s
how for the first time how investigations could profit from their expert
ise. Since then the field has advanced significantly. Voice-\, language-
and speaking characteristics are discussed that have shown to exhibit h
igh speaker discrimination power. Speech analysis methods are demonstrat
ed using real case samples. Finally\, it is shown\, how the historic dia
lect maps of Georg Wenker (1952-1911) stored in the archive of the Deuts
cher Sprachatlas here in Marburg\, are still relevant for forensic inves
 tigations today. \n

DESCRIPTION:Logophoricity and the corresponding pronouns represent a rela
tively uncommon phenomenon across the world’s languages. This presentati
on investigates the syntactic properties and semantic roles of logophori
c pronouns within Ewe\, an Atlantic-Congo language spoken in West Africa
. By analyzing relevant examples\, this talk will illuminate the semanti
c features and interpretation of these logophoric pronouns and contextua
lize them within the framework of Binding Theory\, which is established
in generative grammar. I will provide an overview of the usage and seman
tic aspects of logophoric pronouns and explore how the concept of logoph
oricity interacts with Binding Principles A and B. At first sight\, logo
phoric pronouns seem to be an exception to the syntactic constraints of
Binding Theory which is why I take a look at the semantics of logophoric
ity\, particularly looking at their role in discourse. While doing so\,
my focus will be on the semantic interpretation of these pronouns with a
look into methods of disambiguation in case of multiple possible refere
 nts.

We

DESCRIPTION:Potential changes in plosive VOT during the menstrual cycle\n
 Lotta Hilliger\, Sophie Ziemer\, Adrian P. Simpson\, Melanie Weirich\nFr
iedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena\nSeveral studies have analysed potenti
al gender-specific differences in voice onset time\n(VOT) in onset plosi
ves in different varieties of English. Results have been variable\, find
ing\ndifferences in some cases (Swartz 1992\, Karlsson & Zetterholm 2004
\, Romeo et al. 2013)\,\nbut not in others (Morris et al. 2008\, McCrea
2004\, Whiteside et al. 2004). Where\nsignificant differences have been
found\, it is female speakers who have longer VOT. It has\nbeen suggeste
d that at least one reason for the observed variability is the failure t
o\nconsider differences in laryngeal behaviour brought about by hormonal
changes during the\nmenstrual cycle (Whiteside et al. 2004\, Wadnerkar
et al. 2006).\nThe present study examines possible menstrual cycle-relat
ed differences in the VOT of\nonset /p/ and /k/ in a sample of 30 young
 (18-25 year-olds) German-speaking women\,\npart of a larger study of ca.
80 women from three age groups (DFG\, WE5757/4). Female\nsubjects were
recruited who reported having a regular cycle and not taking any hormona
l\ncontraception. They were recorded during the fertile and luteal phase
s of the menstrual\ncycle. Subjects recorded short samples of read and s
pontaneous speech. Saliva samples\nwere collected for hormonal analysis
 (progesterone\, estradiol\, testosterone) during each\nrecording session
.\nVOT was measured in fortis labial and dorsal plosives in the verb for
ms gepachtet\n("leased") and gekauft ("bought") from two read sentences
from the luteal and fertile\nphases. Average utterance durations were us
ed to normalise individual VOT durations to\nexclude any tempo differenc
es.\nThe boxplot in Figure 1 shows normalised VOT plotted as a function
of plosive and phase\nin the cycle. As we can clearly see\, VOT varies s
 ignificantly as a function of place of\narticulation (Estimate= -21.533\
 , SD = 2.711 p < .001) but values do not vary as a function\nof recordin
g time during the cycle.\nThe results of this study\, to our knowledge t

DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I present the results of my Bachelor’s thesis.
I conducted a rating study in which German native speakers rated how we
ll different sentences functioned for them as expressions of a generic o
r specific reading.\nGeneric statements express generalizations about ki
 nds\, such as <I>Cats meow</I> or <I>A tiger is striped</I>. In German\,
the subjects that the generalizations are made about can in principle b
e singular or plural\, definite or indefinite\, though it depends largel
y on the context which of the resulting four variants is actually used.
Though much theoretical work on generics has been done\, to my knowledge
there is not one empirical study that surveys the whole spectrum of var
iation in German systematically. The present experiment may serve as a f
irst step towards closing this gap.\nGenerics are also closely related t
o Psychological Essentialism\, i. e. the tendency of the human mind to b
elieve that members of a given category are (a) alike and (b) distinct f
rom members of other categories in ways that are inherent\, deeply meani
ngful and not always directly observable (Gelman 2003). This tendency to
essentialize is not equally strong for all types of categories\, but na
tural kinds (animals\, plants\, and natural substances) are more likely
to be essentialized than social groups\, which are in turn more likely t
 han man-made objects (e.g. Brandone & Gelman 2010\, 2013). I also invest
igate whether these domain differences influence the phrasing of generic
  nominals.\n(references can be found online)

DESCRIPTION:There is evidence that Afrikaans is undergoing tonogenesis\,
whereby the difference in voice onset time (VOT) between voiced and voic

DESCRIPTION:Since the introduction of the laryngeal theory\, PIE has been
reconstructed with three series of stops. The (neo-)traditional reconst
ruction is the Dh-D-T system but this is unattested in the world's langu
ages except as a short-lived transitional stage (e.g. as in Madurese). T
he rise of typology led people to reconsider the phonetic values of the
three series\; the two popular alternative theories today are the glotta
 lic theory (Gamkrelidze & Ivanov 1973\, Hopper 1973\, Kortlandt 1978\, V
ennemann 1984) and the implosive theory (Kümmel 2012a / Weiss 2009). Bot
h theories were partly motivated by the dissimilatory constraint targeti
ng the *D series\, suggesting it had a marked feature that could only oc
cur once in a word\, its absence in suffixes and endings\, and the “b-ga
p”. However\, these theories still have some problems\, well summarized
by Kümmel (2007: 299-310). This talk will explore a different system fea
turing pre-nasalized stops for the IE mediae\, resulting in a system as
it is found in Sinhalese or Dhivehi (D-ND-T). It will be argued that thi
s reconstruction can account for the behaviour of the PIE mediae as well
as all the other reconstructions can. Additionally\, it tries to accoun
t for the TeNDh-exception of the TeDh root structure ban (Kümmel 2012b\,
De Vaan 1999) as a neutralization of PIE mediae before a nasal (Kümmel
 2017).

DESCRIPTION:“Marked words that depict sensory imagery” is how Dingemanse
(2019: 16\, 2023: 466) quite broadly defines ideophones. They are ‘marke
d’ as they often stand out from other elements of a given language. They
‘depict’\, rather than describe ‘sensory imagery’\, be it sound\, movem
ent or other domains in the sense that they allow the speaker to tow the
listener into a scene once experienced by the speaker. Ideophones are f
airly widespread but nonetheless often overlooked elements. This study l
ooks at ideophones in the South Central [Kuki-Chin] branch of Trans-Hima
layan [Sino-Tibetan]. I first examine ideophones in the Thadou language
(TH\, Eastern India) on the basis of an annotated corpus (see Haokip 202
1). In the second part\, I compare the results to descriptions of ideoph
ones in related languages. Patent (1998)\, Chelliah et al. (2020) among
others have compared their data to a handful of related languages\, but
thus far\, an exhaustive comparison of ideophones in South Central langu
ages is missing. In Thadou\, ideophones always occur post-verbally and a
s a full or partial reduplication of a monosyllabic element. They usuall
y collocate with specific verbs which is quite common in the broader reg
ion (see e.g. Lahaussois 2023 or Modi and Post 2020). Ideophones often o
ccur in pairs which can highlight different aspects such as size or conn
otation. The number of ideophones employed by the languages of the area
is usually quite large and more often than not they count in the hundred
s as in Thadou itself (Haokip 2014: 71).

DESCRIPTION:Grammatical voice (or diathesis) is a verbal category which “
signal[s] alternations in the configurations of nominal statuses with wh
ich verbs are in particular relationships” (Klaiman 1991: 1). As Inglese
(2021: 491) points out\, middle voice—as a third voice type next to act
ive and passive—“has been used in reference to a wide range of phenomena
[...]”. Commonly mentioned examples of languages which have a middle vo
 ice system are\, e.g.\, Ancient Greek and Sanskrit (c.f. Smyth 1920: 390
 -394 and Burrow 2001: 294-295\, respectively). I follow the exposition i
n Inglese’s (2021) typological study of middle voice systems where he co
nceptualizes middle markers as polyfunctional and explicates that they o
ught to be obligatory with some verbs (non-oppositional) while also non-
obligatory with others (oppositional)\, i.e. there are both frozen and n
 on-frozen forms in a language.\n\nIn my presentation\, I will discuss fi
rst and early observations on middle voice systems found in Dravidian la
nguages of South India\, with examples from Kannada\, Tamil\, and Malaya
lam. Burrow & Emeneau (1984\, entry 2151) note that the verb koɭ “to sei
 ze\, receive\, buy\, acquire\, etc.” (form from Tamil) is an auxiliary w
ith reflexive meaning in multiple Dravidian languages. Reflexive is one
of the many functions associated with the middle. It seems that koɭ deve
lops into a middle marker at different rates\, with regard to the langua
 ges.\n\nReferences:\nBurrow\, T. & M. B. Emeneau. (1984). A Dravidian Et
