Vortrag: How (not) to conduct an experiment

Experience from a self-paced reading study

This talk is both a presentation of my master’s thesis and an insight into the different stages of an experiment. My thesis is based on a self-paced reading experiment conducted to answer the question whether a contrast in animacy between subject and object affects processing in German. The answer to that is “yes and no“ because what is more relevant is the subject animacy in conjunction with the contrast. My aim for the thesis was to design and conduct a simple experiment in order to be able to learn from the entire process, not just certain parts. I would like to share the knowledge I have gained from this, mostly because of the reality of an experiment, which is that everything can go wrong and usually takes much longer than expected. The talk will follow the structure of the thesis (Background, Methods, Results and Discussion), with an emphasis on the relevant experimental stages.
