DESCRIPTION:Introduced in Louisiana at the end of the 17th century\, Fren
ch is today spoken only by an estimated population of 126\,000 people. H
owever\, as it is usually the case in communities where an ethnic langua
ge tends to disappear\, maintenance efforts are now being made to keep F
rench alive. Owing to recent initiatives starting at the end of the 1960
s\, French has been re-introduced and a positive ‘attitude shift’ has be
en observed. The inclusion of French in the media\, public domains\, edu
cational system\, as well as a positive attitude towards the latter\, ar
oused a resurgence of interest for the French language\, encouraging som
e to adopt the language anew. These efforts on maintaining the language
for the present have given rise to the emergence of new learners and thu
s new profiles of speakers\, namely the so-called ‘new speakers’.\nBased
on data collected during field research in Louisiana between October an
d November 2019\, this talk aims to explore the phenomenon of "new speak
ers" within the Franco-Louisiana speech community. It will attempt to an
swer the following question: who are these "new-speakers"? Thus\, by ana
lyzing and profiling this new type of speakers\, this study will accordi
ngly examine the linguistic attitudes and uses of this emerging group an
d the ways in which their identities can be linked to the issues explain
 ed above.
