Vortrag: Keynote: Iconicity in language - on gestures and ideophones

Cornelia Ebert

Formal linguistics generally assumes that form-meaning relations in spoken language are arbitrary and not iconic. Ideophones, such as the English splish-splash, have been considered exceptions to this rule of arbitrariness. Recently, however, researchers have begun to examine iconicity in spoken language more closely, including also work on the semantic contributions of co-speech gestures. In my talk, I will present experimental work on the semantics and pragmatics of ideophones and gestures and how their meaning contributions combine with those of "ordinary" language.
