Lecture: Aspect in Livonian

The role of prefixes and direct object marking

Livonian, a minority language from the Finnic branch of the Uralic language family, shows three different means of expressing grammatical aspect: next to particle verbs and differential object marking (the common Finnic way) also verbal prefixation with borrowed Latvian prefixes. An analysis of inner aspectual values describes the relations between differential object marking and prefixation and attests complementary functions at least to some extent.

Aspect is not a fully grammaticalized category in Livonian. However, three different grammatical means of expressing aspect/aspectuality can be observed: differential object marking and particle verbs (which is common among Finnic languages) as well as verbal prefixation by means of borrowed Latvian prefixes (due to contact influence).
The study starts from the prefixed verbs: what kind of inner aspectual values they express compared with their non-prefixed counterparts, how the possible object cases (genitive and partitive) are combined with the prefixed verbs, and what kind of aspectual values can be observed in these combinations. Making the analysis more difficult a substantial amount of prefixed verbs appears in subordinate clauses, a fact that has to be treated with special consideration.
The study aimed to describe the relations between differential object marking and prefixation: do they occur next to another in mere abundance or could they have developed particular functions?

Livonian belongs to the Finnic branch of the Uralic language family and is an indigenous language in Latvia. Being in the process of revitalization it is now spoken by approximately 200 speakers, mostly researchers, at different levels.
