Version 4.2
Workshop: Gender discrimination through language
The workshop will explore different ways in which gender discrimination can occur in and through language, and how this can be researched from a linguistic perspective. The two workshop conductors will discuss various foci which deal with linguistic gender discrimination, and address ideas on how to raise awareness on these issues, drawing from different perspectives such as queer linguistics, forensic linguistics, pragmatics, and discourse analysis.
Sarah will start with an introduction on slurs which target people ascribing to a specific gender or sexuality and will briefly talk about this concept with regards to attitudes and offensiveness. Another focus of hers will be the discrimination of women (especially rape victims) through victim blaming, how it is realized through language, and which effects it might have on an extra-linguistic context.
Hanna will talk about gender-neutral language in English and German, and discuss issues concerning the attitudes towards gender-neutral language, as well as the translation of gender-neutral terms. She will furthermore discuss queer identity and how it often is discriminated against through language, looking at YouTube vlogs from a discourse analytic perspective.
The workshop wishes to give participants hands-on experience in researching gender discrimination. We would like to provide insights on how to research gender discrimination in language, and offer strategies for raising awareness, based on our own research projects and interests. The workshop will be conducted in English but basic knowledge in German would be beneficial, since some of the data is in German. Men are also very welcome to join ;)!
