Referenzen:
Fassi Fehri, Abdelkader / Marie-Thérèse Vinet (2008): Verbal and nominal classes in Arabic and Chinese. Particularly hard to find are changes in meaning, as they do not necessarily imply a change of form, and lexicographic approaches to the detection of emerging semantically changed lexical units (words, phrases, etc.) are still limited when it comes to the identification of infrequent new meaning. On the one hand currently applied corpus linguistic methods prove to be too dependent on frequency measures, as well as size and composition of the corpora. On the other hand the lexicographic identification process itself is usually not strongly automated, hence only a small number of high-frequency candidates are inspected on the basis of non-randomized, manually drawn samples, causing decisions on changes of meaning to be rather subjective.
In order to overcome these issues we want to integrate recent advances in computational linguistics into the lexicographic process. We will build a fully automatized system that combines controlled human annotation with computational lexical semantic change detection methods in a human-in-the-loop manner to find changing words. The system will predict candidate words on a regular basis from recent language samples (e.g. DeReKo) and present random samples of uses of candidate words to several annotators in a controlled annotation environment. The annotation process is fully automated with an underlying algorithm testing statistical confidence and deciding when to stop the annotation. Once converged, the annotated data will provide a change score and can be inspected visually. In our talk we will show how the system may be used to find new lexemes with a change in meaning between 1990-2010.
Why do natural languages develop morphological structure? Is human cognition biased toward a lexicon that is morphologically structured? And if so, how easily does a learner achieve morphological generalization, that is, how easily may a paradigm be established in a system given some set of cognitive constraints?
Questions such as these can be fruitfully addressed by using computational methods, which provide a highly parametrized test ground for any models of cognition. Importantly, in this case, they allow a great degree of control over crucial confounding factors, such as, for instance, structural bias led by the specific typology of the native language of human subjects in experimental conditions.
In this ongoing project, led by Denis Paperno and Yoad Winter at Utrecht University, we implement a modified skipgram model using FastText word embeddings. Word embeddings allow us to represent both form and meaning using vectors, which are assigned to text words with respect to their distributional properties. In the case of this model, the distributional properties of subword n-grams are take into account to generate the pre-trained word vectors we will use. The goal of this project is to use iterations in order to test the extent to which an ideal learner is able to generalize a morphological paradigm from a limited set of examples in context, thus extracting systematic morphological relations between strings in the input. We plan to use vector cosine similarity, among other test methods, to assess how close together words of a same paradigm are represented. That is, we test for ease of paradigm discovery in an ideal learner, assuming only distributional probabilities of morphemes in the input.
The project is in its early stages, and in this talk we present its methods, advancements, expected results, and current challenges.
/system/people/avatars/000/000/086/original/Captura_de_pantalla_2020-04-26_a_la(s)_16.34.49.png?1588409065
Providing a brief introduction into the field of grammaticalization research, the definition and some aspects of the research history as well as the main hypotheses will be discussed using examples.
After that, the focus will be quantitative approaches to grammaticalization and their merit for the scientific process for the field under investigation.

Mukbang videos originated in South Korea but have in the meantime spread to become a global phenomenon. In a typical Mukbang recording, the eating show performer eats copious amounts of food while engaging the viewers with extensive talk about a wide range of topics. Interesting here is the absence of an audience present during the recording, as we would find during regular dinner conversations which have been categorized as social activity with a focus on the “interactional rather than transactional” (Blum-Kulka 1994: 6). Mukbang YouTubers construct their discourse as a conversation over food which resembles but is also different from traditional face-to-face food conversations, drawing on the notion that “eating together creates a social bond” (Beeman 2014: 32). Mukbang videos, therefore, not only celebrate the pleasure of food (cf. food porn; see, e.g., McBride 2010) but also enact the interactional nature of mealtime discourse. As a form of digitally mediated intimacy, eating shows are of particular interest during the current COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting broadly adopted practice of social distancing.
The Mukbang-Corpus at the heart of this project consists of 100 Anglophone eating show videos by ten widely-subscribed eating show producers/performers. I will draw on this material to introduce the genre of eating shows — more precisely, the Anglophone instantiations of what I call the ‘second generation of eating shows’ (Rüdiger 2020) — and illustrate its evolution. The talk will first address the development of the field from its very beginnings to today and then move on to focus on concrete applied linguistic work on the use of English in aviation contexts. There are few pilots not familiar with the adage “aviate – navigate – communicate” and while it indicates that flying the plane is the number one priority, it also clearly lists communication among the three main tasks any pilot has to handle successfully. In most international flying, the use of what is often referred to as “Aviation English” (cf., e.g., Estival, Farris & Molesworth 2016) is recommended by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and standard practice. It is important to note in this context, however, that Aviation English actually consists of two different specialized registers (cf. Bieswanger 2016). Responding to growing international air travel after the Second World War and in reaction to several accidents and incidents at least partly caused by controller-pilot miscommunication (cf., e.g., Cushing 1994; Jones 2003; Barshi & Farris 2013), the International Civil Aviation Organization developed a set of standards and recommended practices (SARPs) concerning language use in air traffic control communication (cf. ICAO 2007a; ICAO 2007b; ICAO 2016), which has been adopted by most countries world-wide and is referred to as “ICAO standardized phraseology” (ICAO 2016:5-1; Aviation English 1). Standardized phraseology, however, cannot cover every conceivable situation and while all stakeholders in air traffic control communication are encouraged to follow the SARPs whenever possible (cf. ICAO 2016:5-1; Prinzo et al. 2010:15f), switching to Aviation English 2, i.e. what the ICAO terms plain language, defined as “[t]he spontaneous, creative and non-coded use of a given natural language” (ICAO 2010:x), is occasionally inevitable. Based on material from authentic air traffic control communication, we will identify the various challenges the two types of Aviation English pose to different participants in air traffic control communication and demonstrate how Applied Linguistics can and should continue to play an important role in making aviation even safer by helping to constantly develop and improve air traffic control communication.
Dialect contact is a steady research interest in mainstream sociolinguistics (e.g. Trudgill 1986) and Arabic sociolinguistics as well (e.g. Miller et al. 2007). Dialectologists have described the Nile shores and the arabophone oases of the Western Desert of Egypt as an area of encounter different dialect types (e.g. Behnstedt & Woidich 1985-88) and explained their mixed features as the outcome of population movements from a historical linguistic perspective (Behnstedt & Woidich 2018). Focusing on more recent phenomena, De Jong (1996) has described processes of accommodation, levelling and performance in the Bedouin dialects of the Sinai, while Miller (2005) accounted for processes of dialect contact and accommodation in the speech of Upper Egyptian migrants in Cairo. Finally, Bassiouney (2018) has analyzed the competing values of Cairene and Upper Egyptian dialects with a macro-sociolinguistic perspective. The study presented in this talk brings a new insight, as it is based on L2 Arabic rather than L1 Arabic.
The Siwi Berber-speaking population of Siwa has been exposed to different Arabic varieties in different historical moments (Souag 2013). More recently, Siwans are exposed to both Cairene and Bedouin Arabic. The analysis of L2 Arabic spoken by different generations of Siwi speakers points to a growing preference for Cairene Arabic in the younger generations, whose speech displays less occurrences of Bedouin features in comparison to elderly speakers’. In light of the geographical proximity of Bedouin speakers, the preference for Cairene is attributed to the prestige enjoyed by this variety nationwide and aligns with previous studies on dialect contact based on L1 Arabic.

(3) „[…] a palavra República, nesse contexto, significa rés publica e de modo algum o regime republicano.” (CQPweb 2012, politica)

(4) Animal algum vive aqui. (Martins 2015:1)
Kein Tier lebt hier.

Referenzen:
CQPweb. 2012. ‘CRPC: Portugal Only’. Sprachkorpus. Both being Romance languages, they represent one Western European and one Eastern European language. One field in which anglicisms are particularly common is clothing, both due to England’s early dominance in this sector and due to modern American marketing strategies spanning the globe.
A small-scale quantitative study comparing anglicisms in Castilian Spanish and Romanian has been conducted using the H&M online catalogue, specifically the New Year’s collection of 2019. Product names have been analyzed using Görlach’s Dictionary of European Anglicisms (2001). I expected to find a larger number of anglicisms in the Spanish product names due to the classification of Spanish as a Western European language and the geographical proximity to Great Britain. Indeed, anglicisms were found more frequently in the Spanisch product names compared to the Romanian ones.
The analysis of anglicisms in two European languages can give clues not only about language development, convergence and divergence phenomena, but also raises questions about neighbouring phenomena, such as language purism, advertisement, marketing and translation.
Hi, I'm Anna. The lexemes used for analysis were taken from the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (230 000 lemmata) for English and the Duden – Deutsches Universalwörterbuch (250 000 lemmata).

The results showed that 77.1% of English lexemes with lexeme-initial /bl/ had one or more negative meanings associated with them, while 38.5% shared the meaning component ‘unintentional, disruptive’. By comparison, 63.8% of German lexemes had negative meaning and only 23,4 had the meaning component ‘unintentional, disruptive’. Analysis of lexeme-initial /pl/ showed that /bl/ and /pl/ are neither variants of the same phonaestheme in English nor in German.
Berthele, Raphael. 2019. Evidence synthesis typically involves ‚systematic reviews’ which use transparent and objective methods as well as pre-defined appraisal criteria to synthesize all available research on a research question. This reduces risks of bias that traditional literature reviews are vulnerable to. Statistical methods may be used to aggregate results from included studies (meta-analysis) or not ('narrative synthesis', cf. Gough, Oliver & Thomas 2017).

In linguistics, evidence synthesis is used to advance linguistic theory (see Nicenboim, Roettger & Vasishth 2018 for phonetics; see van den Noort et al. 2019 for bilingualism research), potentially inform language policy (Norris & Ortega 2007; Berthele 2019) and guide clinical practice (e. g. concerning dementia, see Brini et al. 2020).

Current challenges include a lack of high-quality primary studies, redundancy due to duplicate work (for an example from linguistics, cf. Brini et al. 2020), shortcomings of statistical methods such as meta-analyses (cf. Nicenboim, Roettger & Vasishth 2018) and keeping reviews up to date in the light of a faster gowing body of research (cf. Westgate & Lindenmayer 2017).

Technical solutions from computational linguistics such as semantic networks and text mining approaches are already used to tackle some of these challenges by automizing labor-intensive stages of systematic reviews (Westgate & Lindenmayer 2017). Going further, Nakagawa et al. (2020) call for a “new ecosystem of evidence synthesis” in which technological solutions “promote openness and interconnectedness” (p. 3). They propose all empicists be organized in open synthesis communities where “synthesis is recognized as the end goal, as researchers design, undertake and report their work” (p. 1).

We will discuss the benefits of evidence synthesis communities for linguistic research and ask how computational linguistics may advance evidence synthesis methodology.
I received my B. Even though researchers have tried to define what makes irony and similar communicative categories such as sarcasm, humor, banter, and how to define and differentiate between them, many different approaches and definitions of each category exist. Therefore, the research of irony today is also strongly connected to research on humor (Brock 2008:543). Irony therefore is closely related to other communications forms using humor, such as jokes, sarcasm or black humor. Besides that, an evaluation of the use of irony, sarcasm, humor, and others, is common in society (Brock 2008:541). Therefore, when researching irony, one has to keep an eye out for the definitions and concepts that are used defining the other phenomena.

Several elements are usually part of irony, namely intonation, pauses, and an opposition of what is said to what is meant (Sperber&Wilson 1981; González-Fuerte et al. 2015). Int his talk, some of the definitions will be explored and an outline of the involved elements in irony will be discussed on examples of irony used in popular TV shows.

Brock, Alexander. 2008.
