DESCRIPTION:The present study\, grounded in Grice’s theory of implicature
s\, examines how learners of German with Spanish as their first language
interpret conversational implicatures in German. Previous research has
shown that L2 speakers do not always interpret implicatures in the same
way as native speakers\, and that factors such as language proficiency a
nd exposure to the target language can influence this interpretation. Mo
st studies in this area have used English as the target language. This s
tudy aims to contribute expanding the evidence base by exploring a diffe
rent language. Participants included 56 native speakers of German and 52
native Spanish speakers with at least a B2 level of German. The Spanish
speakers were asked about their level of proficiency in German and the
length of the time they had lived in Germany. They completed a 24-item m
ultiple-choice questionnaire containing particularized conversational im
plicatures in German. Results showed that non-native speakers were less
likely than native speakers to accurately interpret the implicatures. Pr
oficiency level had a significant effect on accuracy\, while length of r
 esidence in Germany did not.
