Workshop: How to PhD: The First Year and Narrowing Your Research Subject

n honest and informal talk about the first year of a linguistics PhD: how to deal with ambiguity, doubt, and the challenge of turning broad interests into a viable research topic. No advice, just experience.

Starting a PhD in linguistics can feel like being dropped into a vast, chaotic landscape with no clear map. You're expected to “find a topic,” narrow it down, read everything, and somehow become a researcher — all at once. In this talk, I reflect on my first year of the PhD: what helped me narrow down my research subject (and what didn’t), how I dealt with overwhelm and self-doubt, and what I wish I had known when I started. This is not a “how-to” guide or expert advice — it’s an open, down-to-earth account of one student’s early research journey. The talk is aimed at students in linguistics who are considering a PhD, just starting one, or feeling lost somewhere in between. There will be room for discussion at the end, and audience input is welcome
