DESCRIPTION:Collecting data from human participants is slow and costly. R
 ecruitment is difficult\, participants are often un- or underpaid\, and 
 results are affected by biases such as the Observer’s Paradox and the Ha
 wthorne Effect. In addition\, many sample groups are WEIRD (from Western
 \, educated\, industrialized\, rich\, and democratic societies). So can 
 Artificial Intelligence (AI) simulate human participants? To test this\,
  I generated a sample of 600 AI participants using the LLaMA 3.1 model (
 8B)\, approximating Germany’s population based on 2024 federal statistic
 s. Their questionnaire responses were compared to data from human partic
 ipants. No prior computational knowledge is required\, everyone interest

DESCRIPTION:German distinguishes between two conjugation classes. While s
 trong verbs like "lesen" 'to read' typically show a root vowel change (a
 blaut) in the synthetic past tense and no overt suffixal realizations of
  past tense and agreement for the first/third person singular ("er/sie l
 as")\, the past tense forms of weak verbs like "lernen" 'to learn' surfa
 ce with the suffix -t for past tense and -e for first/third person singu
 lar agreement ("er/sie lernte") (Wöllstein\, 2022).\n\nIn Early New High
  German (Dammel\, 2011\; Wegera\, 2023) as well as in child speech of ch
 ildren acquiring German (Petrova\, 2016)\, forms are attested that mix p
 roperties of both conjugation classes: Past tense forms like "nahme" or 
 "fande" surface with a root vowel change and no past tense suffix like s
 trong verbs but with the overt agreement exponent -e of weak verbs. \n\n
 This poster discusses implications for morphological theory within the f
 ramework of Distributed Morphology (Halle and Marantz\, 1993\; Embick\, 
 2015\; Alexiadou et al.\, to appear) that come from these forms. The ana
 lysis is based on the concept of secondary feature negligence by childre
 n from the analysis of Hein et al. (2024\; 2025) on English past tense "
 errors". Children's representations of secondary features are unstable a
 nd they occasionally fail to consider them during Vocabulary Insertion. 
 This concept can be carried over to diachronic change and can - together
  with assumptions about the directionality of change - account for the a
 ttested forms and rule out unattested combinations of properties of stro
 ng and weak verbs in one form. Further implications for the modeling of 
 root vowel changes and conjugation classes within Distributed Morphology
  will be discussed.

DESCRIPTION:This presentation provides an insight into the interplay of c
 ore case marking and information structure in Thadou\, a Trans-Himalayan
  language of Northeast India. At first glance\, the use of the ergative 
 marker in Thadou seems to be more (though not entirely) obligatory than 
 in other Trans-Himalayan languages. However\, it is shown that nonethele
 ss ergativity in Thadou behaves closer to systems of ergativity in relat
 ed languages than to those found in languages with more canonical system
 s of ergativity based on grammatical relations. These languages exhibit 
 what is often referred to as ‘optional ergativity’ which is guided by va
 rious factors often related to the realm of discourse-pragmatics and inf
 ormation structure. The occurrence of the marker in Thadou too is condit
 ioned by discourse-pragmatic factors. In the data used\, switches in ref
 erents\, contrastive functions\, and the marking of direct speech could 
 be identified as the primary environments. Furthermore\, it is argued th
 at the often seemingly more obligatory system of ergativity in Thadou\, 
 and South Central languages in general\, stands in indirect relationship
  with their shared innovation of person cross-reference on the verb\, wh
 ich pattern accusatively and might have reduced the environments in whic
 h free pronouns and noun phrases\, which act as host for the ergative\, 
 can occur.

DESCRIPTION:Prosodie spielt eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Vermittlung 
 kommunikativer Absichten (Villani et al. 2025: 1). In den letzten Jahren
  wurden zunehmend Studien zur Identifikation von Intonationskurven in ve
 rschiedenen Sprachen veröffentlicht (bspw. Petrone & D’Imperio 2011\; Pe
 trone & Niebuhr 2014). Eine wichtige Frage dabei ist\, wieviel prosodisc
 hes Material nötig ist\, um einen Sprechakt eindeutig zu identifizieren.
  Aufbauend auf Forschung zum temporalen Verlauf von Sprechakterkennung d
 urch Muttersprachler:innen (Villani et al. 2025) untersucht die vorliege
 nde Studie\, ab welchem Zeitpunkt im Satz Italienisch-Lernende zwischen 
 strukturell formgleichen Aussagen und polaren Fragen unterscheiden könne
 n. Mithilfe der Gating-Technik zeigt sich\, dass für deutschsprachige Le
 rnende in italienischen Sätzen die fallende bzw. steigend-fallende F0-Ko
 ntur im Nuklearakzent ausschlaggebend für die Sprechakterkennung ist. Da
 bei werden Fragen etwas früher erkannt als Aussagen. Neben dem Vergleich
  mit muttersprachlichen Proband:innen werden auch die Ergebnisse untersc
 hiedlicher Sprachniveaus verglichen und unter anderem die Relevanz der P
 rosodie für die Pragmatikvermittlung im Sprachunterricht diskutiert.

DESCRIPTION:Virtual space is one of the domains undergoing rapid developm
 ent and transformation. Given that it is characterized by a fairly free 
 expression of emotions and creativity\, within the Internet discourse ce
 rtain linguistic phenomena are more emphasized than anywhere else. The s
 ubject of this paper\, the paradoxical use of words with negative connot
 ations in a positive context\, is one of them. Therefore\, the goal is t
 o understand the practical value of negative lexis on social media: surv
 ey and software analysis are carried out to verify the assumption that c
 ontextually positive sentences containing negative words are perceived a
 s more intense compared to the ones without such words. Also\, the poten
 tial of software-conducted sentiment analysis\, in this case the SentiSt
 rength program\, to detect this difference in intensity is tested. The r
 esults indicate that negative lexis contributes to the strength of the p
 ositive content of the sentence\, and that the software is unable to det
 ect this phenomenon. The implications of the research refer to the neces
 sity of analysing linguistic phenomena within internet discourse in orde
 r to properly understand this dynamic variety of language\, but also to 
 develop the potential of sentiment analysis software to recognize more c
 omplex linguistic phenomena.
