Recent changes in the assignment of gender to color words in German

Recently, changes in the assignment of grammatical gender to color nouns have been observed in the younger population (approximate age: < 22 years) of eastern Austria. A pilot study was conducted to monitor and capture the changes and their distribution. It was found that a split in semantic concepts of color nouns into perceptually used color nouns and instrumentally used color nouns seems to be the offspring for the emerging assignment of female gender to color nouns.
