Conférence: “He don’t speak English but he communicates” – Interaction Patterns and Discourse Strategies in Veterinarian-Client-Pet Health Communication”

Interactions in health are not limited to human medicine and healthcare – rather, they can also pertain to animals and their needs and welfare. In veterinarian settings, already complex communication strategies not only concern the usual two parties (patient and health expert) but involve a dialogue between a veterinarian and a client which revolves around the pet-patient. This talk sketches out briefly the research questions, data and methodology used in my master thesis. Which is concerned with the task of both the client and the veterinarian to vocalise the medical conditions of the pet, and to discuss medical procedures to follow in the setting of veterinarian reality televisions. For this I analysed the discourse between veterinarian and clients in three different vet reality TV series concerning the distribution of interactions, their relational work strategies, expert positioning as well as advice giving.
