Vortrag: Emotion Representation in Dialogue Systems
Emotions are an incredibly complex natural phenomenon, and their definition is a constant research struggle in many fields ranging from Philosophy all the way to Natural Language Processing. They play a vital role in human communication and influence our behavior. In current technological development emotions have become especially interesting for dialogue systems or chat bots, as they are not only intended to communicate with but impersonate real human beings. This begs the questions – how can we represent emotions in a way that a machine can learn, recognize, and use them correctly? We will attempt a definition for emotions, taking existing definitions from Philosophy and Psychology into account and discuss important aspects that make up our human emotional range. Additionally, three representation methods for emotions (categorical, appraisal and dimensional) are introduced, as well as a complex combination approach of categorical and dimensional is explained, the Hourglass of Emotions.
