Workshop: Interlinear Glossing Workshop
How to (not) use Glosses
When reading or writing papers, we frequently interact with interlinear glosses, which show the structure and translation for an utterance in the object language. Many of us know - or think that they know - how to read and to create glosses, but how do we make sure that we get our point across?
This workshop is for people who want to get an introduction on how to work with interlinear glosses using the Leipzig Glossing Rules as well as everyone who thinks they could go for a refresher!
Interlinear Glossing can be a helpful tool that provides relevant information at a glance, but can also allow deeper insight into structures and forms of the languages under investigation. Inconsistent or ideosyncratic usage can however make any gloss an indecipherable mess that hinders comprehension of an entire paper.
The Leipzig Glossing Rules (LGR) have become a widespread standard for the formatting of glosses and applied and accepted in a wide range of publications.
This workshop aims to introduce the basic rules and usage, as well as common mistakes and pitfalls that plague even the works of frequently published and cited authors. A few exercises serve to directly put the theoretical concepts into practice: You will correct faulty glosses and start creating your own. Having stuck to the rules for this part, we will then touch upon where it can be benificial to bend the rules, or go beyond them.
Glossing solutions for LateX and Word will be briefly discussed, but are not the focus of this workshop.
