Vortrag: Colloquial Upper Sorbian and the Sentence Bracket
Sketching a Minimalist Analysis
In Colloquial Upper Sorbian, a variety of Sorbian spoken in upper Lusatia, sentences which utilize auxiliary verbs usually exhibit a Sentence Bracket. This syntactic configuration is characterized by an auxiliary in an early position which is separated by other constituents from the main verb in a late (often final) position. In a 2006 chapter, Breu & Scholze argue against analyzing the early auxiliary position as V2, or as syntactically conditioned. Instead, they propose a phonological explanation for the auxiliary placement (Breu & Scholze (2006):51).
In this talk, I argue that the early auxiliary position, while not V2, is in fact syntactically conditioned and propose a minimalist analysis of the phenomenon, along with a sketch of the underlying structure of the Colloquial Upper Sorbian declarative clause in general.
