Workshop: Trees, Waves and Friends (PART TWO)

Waves & Linkages

Everybody knows that some languages are related. Linguists usually use a tree diagram (dendograms) to illustrate the relationships between languages. However, trees are not the only proposed model for language diversification. In this workshop series in two parts, we will look at different models of language diversification. The workshops are designed for non-historical linguists who wish to learn more about these models and deepen their understanding of the underlying theoretical considerations, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. During the workshops you will develop a "passive knowledge" of these models in order to evaluate the models you incounter in the literature.

In part two of the workshop series, we will discuss the wave model and its successors, such as linkages and glottometry. We will explore why some linguists proposed to abandon trees and what are the major arguments for and against their alternative proposals.
It is not necessary to attend part one of the workshop series in order to follow this workshop.
