Vortrag: Sociolinguistic aspects of the census, or how “objective” linguistic data is created

The census is one of common ways how to get information about the number of speakers of different languages, which should lead to more targeted policy measures protecting the language communities.

However, in countries where the census is conducted by self-completion by respondents, questions arise regarding self-definition by respondents and the determination of their language. In the Czech Republic, for example, the census only allows certain languages to be filled in, and not, for example, (transitional) dialects.

In my talk, I would like to partially challenge the notion of the “objectivity” of censuses by presenting—drawing on the article by Kinc and Nekvapil, 2025—various politically strategic decisions made by members of minorities and various persuasion practices leading to the declaration of a certain linguistic and ethnic affiliation. I will focus on the practices of the German and the Polish minority in Czechia prior to the 2021 Czech census.
