Workshop: Teach yourself Hittite Cuneiform
incl. clay tablets
In this practical workshop, you will learn about the oldest writing system of the world: cuneiform. Furthermore, you will even get the possibility to try writing it on clay tablets yourself!
Cuneiform originated in the Early Bronze Age in Mesopotamia and was used to write the Sumerian language on clay tablets. From there, it spread and became a popular writing system for other languages in the area. Through the Akkadians, the Hittites learned to use Cuneiform when Sumerian wasn't even used as a living language anymore. Hittite is the oldest attested Indo-European language and as such is related to languages such as English, French or Hindi. Because of the transmission through Sumerian and Akkadian, the Hittites adopted both Akkadian and Sumerian writing practices, resulting in a syllabary that is not really suitable for the Hittite phonology mixed with quasi-logogramms.
In the second half, you will have the oppurtunity to create your very own clay tablet and learn to write cuneiform!
