Lecture: Pragmatic Markers in Direct Messaging
In linguistics, we often distinguish between written and spoken data. Text messages are a written medium, but in many cases less formal than other written mediums, and potentially closer to spoken words. I plan to analyse the use of pragmatic markers, a feature most common in spoken language, in direct messages (WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Tumblr DMs, etc…) in my bachelor thesis and compare it to the use of pragmatic markers in spoken language. In this talk I plan to outline the preliminary theories, the data collection and the planned approach for the analysis.
