Lecture: Keynote: Tone Languages: Introduction and typological overview

Ulrike Zoch

In the first part of my presentation, I will give a general definition of tonal languages and mention the most important parameters to consider when describing such a language from a typological point of view. The second part will be devoted to tone as a grammatical morpheme, i.e. I will give an overview of examples from different types of tonal languages that use tone with a wide range of grammatical meanings. The presentation will conclude with a short practical demonstration of how underlying tones (i.e. tonemes) are derived from surface tones in a language with tonal interactions and resulting allotones.
