This presentation aims to evaluate the AI tool HuggingGPT based on key post-humanist ideas as theorised by Donna Harraway. The main focus lies on Harraway’s concepts of the Cyborg that overcomes humanist dichotomies, exists independently of its ancestors and leads Harraway to argue strongly in favour of technological advancement. This is contextualised in a linguistic context by posing the questions [1] which role does/can/should language play for Harraway's theories and [2] how can these theories be of aid in linguistic approaches to artificial intelligence.
It is furthermore discussed how Harraway's feminist and socialist utopia can be applied onto current AI discourse. The presentation highlights both the potentials and limitations of the large language model based tool HuggingGPT as a step towards equalising technologies. In the following, examples for how post-humanist categories can be adapted and used to conceptualise such tools are illustrated. It is concluded that HuggingGPT’s strong interconnection with the general human public serves as an interesting base for discussing these points and that some aspects of Harraway’s theory. Especially her idealistic view of technological advancements, harbour strong potential for improving communication between interdisciplinary stakeholders. This aspect is of course vital for developing categories for ethical AI evaluation as well as for defining the role(s) linguistics and language philosophy can play in it.
