Every year, millions of students worldwide choose to study abroad in order to pursue their education in diverse countries. This growing trend not only provides an opportunity for students to expand their academic horizons but also allows them to gain valuable experience in intercultural competence. Intercultural competence refers to the ability to effectively communicate and interact with people from different cultures. It involves being aware of one's own cultural biases and assumptions, as well as understanding and respecting the beliefs, values, and practices of others. Intercultural competence is “a set of cognitive, affective, and behavioral skills and characteristics that support effective and appropriate interaction in a variety of cultural contexts” (Deardorff 2006; 241). The aim of the present study was to explore the impact of studying abroad on the development of intercultural competence among international students in Poland. Data for this study were collected through a survey that included open-ended questions and elicited responses from participants studying in Poland, originating from diverse countries and cultural backgrounds. The findings revealed that studying abroad significantly contributes to the development of intercultural competence among international students and increases awareness of cultural differences. Additionally, they gain a better understanding of cultural differences, which helps them become more tolerant and open-minded. By embracing the opportunity to study abroad, students can unlock their full potential in terms of cultural understanding.
