Vortrag: Gender bias in language: lexical gender modification of gender-neutral occupational terms in English

Talk presenting a bachelor's thesis on implicit gender biases carried by gender-neutral occupational terms (e.g. attorney, teacher, artist). This topic was investigated in a corpus-based approach using COCA, with a qualitative context analysis of the terms' referents as well as a quantitative analysis of the instances the occupational terms appeared with gendered modifiers. Results indicate that gender-neutral occupational terms are likely to carry implicit male biases while female biases were close to non-existent.

The event will feature a presentation of the thesis including theoretical background, methodology and the interpretation of the analysis results. As linguistic research has tended to focus on lexically gendered occupational terms and their alternatives (e.g. fireman/firefighter) instead of gender-neutral occupational terms, the study attempts to bridge a data gap in the research field of gender biases in language as well as come up with ways to incorporate gender-neutral occupational terms into linguistic research in the future. In the discussion part following the presentation of the thesis, anything related to the topic, including questions, points of contention and ideas, can be brought up. Hopefully, an interesting and productive discussion can lead to more interest in gender biases in language and maybe even an increase in studies in this field.
