Vortrag: Exploring First Language Attrition in Adult Second Language Learners
A Study on Crosslinguistic Influence in SLA

This lecture will consider the implications of L2 influence on the L1 by contextualizing a prior conducted quantitative study of 28 speakers within Crosslinguistic Influence (CLI) and Dynamic Systems Theory (DST) and comparing the findings to previous research on L2 influence within CLI. The central research questions which motivated this study were whether and to what extent L2 influence is noticed by the speakers and if the instances of L2 influences can be taken as evidence for possible L1 attrition.
Findings showed that while grammatical structures and pronunciation in the L1 remain largely stable, lexical and sociopragmatic domains are more easily affected by L2 influence. Speakers living in an L1 environment often perceived more L2 influence, likely due to a high L2 usage in daily life. The sociolinguistic environment emerged as a significant factor in shaping language behaviour and identity, with several participants reporting a shift in cultural connection and communicative preferences. However, despite reported L2 influence, most speakers rated their L2 proficiency as stable, which suggests that L1 attrition does not appear to be present here.
A contextualization of the findings shows that not all instances of L2 influence should be readily interpreted as evidence of L1 attrition, nor is all L2 influence necessarily negative. Existing research suggests (see Pavlenko, 2004) that multilinguals benefit from having access to a broader range of linguistic resources. Thus, crosslinguistic influence may be viewed as an enrichment of one’s linguistic repertoire.
