A Parallel Structural Account for Passives and Antipassives
Evidence from Case Marking
This talk will provide a parallel, unified structural account of passives and antipassives in nominative-accusative and absolutive-ergative languages. It will be argued that passives and antipassives are not derived from their active transitive counterparts, but syntactically intransitive, with the suppressed argument being an optional adjunct PP. The analysis is based on evidence from morphological case marking.
