Other: Keynote: Register variation in child speech: Morphological and morphosyntactic features in role play conversations

Veronika Mattes

The talk will present an analysis of spontaneous children's conversations in a longitudinal corpus of two monolingual German speaking children, age 3 to 9, in interaction with parents, siblings and peers. It focuses on the distribution of morphological and morphosyntactic structures in different communicative situations in role play.
It will be demonstrated that certain complex morphological and morphosyntactic structures (for example expressions of subjunctive modality) that are only rarely found in child-adult conversations are well used by the children (from age 3 on) when imitating adults or when negotiating roles or scripts for pretend plays. This highlights that the usage of complex language structure is not only a matter of cognitive and linguistic development, but also strongly depends on the child's experience with different registers in different social interactions.
