Other: Keynote: The Language of the Arab Minority in Southern Iran: a Language Documentation Project

Dina El Zarka

The Arabic varieties spoken on the Persian Gulf in the two Iranian provinces Bushehr and Hormozgan have hitherto not been systematically investigated. It was only known that these varieties most probably belong to the group of Gulf Arabic dialects spoken on the Arabian side of the Gulf from Kuwait to Oman. In this talk, I provide information on our FWF-project located at the Dept. of Linguistics, Graz University, in cooperation with the Dept. of Oriental Studies, Univ. of Vienna. The project is designed to document and describe the variation in the speech of the Arab minority living on the Iranian side of the Gulf and to professionally archive the data and make them available to other researchers.
A second goal of the project is to investigate language contact phenomena between Arabic, a Semitic language (Afroasiatic), and Persian, which belongs to the Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family. I also present a variationist study on gender agreement in the local Arabic varieties and show changes in the system that are obviously due to the influence of Persian. Persian is a language that lacks grammatical gender, while Arabic has two genders: masculine and feminine. The study also takes socio-linguistic factors such as age, gender and education into account.
