Vortrag: Social Status of African-American Vernacular English
African-American Vernacular English is regarded as a dialect used by people of different color and different countries. It has been less than 50 years since William Labov research, but there are still a lot of controversies about the status of this language phenomenon. They commence from the theories of its origin and continue towards its phonetic, grammatical and lexical differences. Howbeit, the most important and complex questions are built around the social status of the dialect. This work considers analysis of cases of verbal deprivation of speakers of the dialect on the Internet (youtube.com, reddit.com, etc.). The result of this research shows the connection between defending the right to speak the dialect and the value of self-identification.
