Vortrag: Negation in Shared Sign Languages
Kata Kolok, Inuit Uukturausingit and Adamorobe Sign Language

The basis of my presentation will be my BA thesis on negation in shared sign languages. I focused on the three languages Kata Kolok (KK) from Bali, Inuit Uukturausingit (IUR) from the circumpolar north and Adamorobe Sign Language (AdaSL) from Ghana.
For my thesis, I analysed their NegP-structures and discussed the languages’ position in the Jesperson Cycle. My theoretical research is mainly based on work by Roland Pfau (University of Amsterdam) and van der Auwera on the Jesperson Cycle (as also on the work of the respective researchers of the languages like Joke Schuit or PhD. Hannah Lutzenberger).
I intend to first give a brief sketch on sign languages and especially on shared sign languages. Then, I could provide a short introduction to the research on negation in sign languages. This could be followed by presenting the data and analysis.
The data showed that all three sign languages exhibited different ways of combining negation strategies (manual, non-manual, both) and showed different degrees of lexicalizations of non-manual markers. They may all be placed early in the Jesperson Cycle, although there is generally not much data and thus this interpretation should be treated with due caution. Especially KK and AdaSL exhibit very cool ways of expressing negation.
